There are a few concerns that many of my clients consistently seem to butt heads with;
“What if I fail?” (To help on this one, click here.)
“What if I succeed?” (What then?!)
“I feel like I’m starting again.”
“Just how do I start?”
“This is not what people expect of me.”
And the money pot question, “How do I keep supporting myself financially whilst doing this?”
This question is not about money. This question is about your expectations.
What do you expect from the new role that you’re stepping into? (Whether it be as a business owner, a new career or some other role.) Do you expect that this is a role that’s going to make you the same amount of money as now?
In what time frame do you expect to do this? In what time frame do you expect to transition and be making the same amount of money? In what time frame do you expect to be making more then what you are now? In what timeframe do you expect to be making infinitely more then what you are now?
In what capacity do you expect to be exerting yourself in your new role? Is it full time, straight away? Or is it part time at first? Do you expect that you’ll be exerting more energy then you currently are for the same amount of return?
Do you expect that you’ll be taking one step backward in order to take two steps forward? Or do you expect things to remain unchanged, as they are, as your current lifestyle dictates?
The pattern I see many a time is that clients want everything to happen yesterday. I was like this. It doesn’t quite work that way – and the only reason I know is that I’ve travelled the path to get here. I’ve taken that one step backward in order to move two steps forward.
I had an expectation of maintaining a certain lifestyle; overseas trips, mortgage payments, once a month clothes shopping, entertainment, entertainment, entertainment, shoes, shoes… shoes.
You might like to maintain a certain lifestyle. And that’s ok. It’s probably a very comfortable lifestyle. But what about that lifestyle is making you insanely fulfilled?
If there are things on that list that are fulfilling, then they must stay. Sure.
But what are you willing to sacrifice in order to feel insanely fulfilled?
What are you willing to give up in order to actually get?
You don’t have to do it all straight away. Believe me, it’s not like ripping off a band aid.
It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. It can be somewhere in between. Here’s how;
You can sacrifice a little of your current lifestyle in order to gain a little of your future fulfilment. (Do you give up your three magazine subscriptions and weekly facials to save money for that new venture/ course/ marketing?)
You can sacrifice a little of your current income in order to gain a little more time. (Do you drop to a four day week? Do you drop to a three day week?)
You can sacrifice a little of your time in order to gain a little momentum. (Do you work a Saturday morning on your new business now? Do you read educational articles in place of your nightly TV shows?)
You can always, always alter your expectations of what you need and where you think you should be. After all, who said you should be marching to anyone else’s drumbeat but your own?
How do you manage the gap between all or nothing? How do you create realism around your expectations when bringing your dream to fruition? We’d love to hear from you! Let us know in the comments below.
With love
Lynda
