As someone trained in coaching, I’m supposed to love goals. Supposed to. Can I tell you a secret? I can’t stand ‘em. Can. Not. Stand. Them.

I find goals rather one dimensional.

Everyone has heard of the ‘smart’ goals formula – goals must be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound. Is this formula not sooooo 2008?

Yes, I agree they need to be all of the above. But they also need something else. They need a little more ‘ootzpah’.

They need to be connected to your vision, they need feeling and they need ritual.

Connect to your vision. Any goal that you shoot for needs to relate back to your big fat ‘why’. Why are you doing the thing that you’re doing? What do you see as the ultimate vision for achieving these goals? What is the bigger picture? This needs to be figured out before anything else happens.

(NB: You could have a few different visions according to different focuses in your life, for example, a vision for your business or career, a vision for your intimate relationship and a vision for your family.)

They need feeling. This is vital. If you cannot feel the feeling that goes with the goal, your body will not get this on a cellular level. If your body does not get this on a cellular level, your unconscious mind (which is in fact your body) will not be in alignment with your conscious mind – the mind that created the goals. You need to be congruent in both. In order to do this, close your eyes and visualise the completion of your goal as though it is happening right now and feel the feelings that go alongside this. Imagine them spreading throughout your entire body. Bathe in that feeling for a good ten minutes or so. Hmmm. Yummy.

Finally, rinse and repeat. Oh this is not a one trick pony. This is a consistent practice which takes place every single day. If you can’t do that, do it twice a week or once a week. Just be consistent. Denise Duffield Thomas says, the difference between a millionaire and a billionaire is writing goals down once a day as opposed to twice a day.

So, when you have a goal – attach it to your vision. Attach it to your big ‘why’. Then imagine you are already there, feeling the feelings that go with it, so your unconscious mind can catch up to your conscious mind. Do this on a ritualised basis, and you’ll find the actions start taking care of themselves.

Now let’s hear from you. In the comments below, let our community know what goals you have and the feelings that go along with it.

With love
